Living

Dulness

by Walter Savage Landor 1775–1864

From Works and Life, ed. Forster, vol. VIII (1876)

Living

Deem me not sad and sorrowful
Because my looks and words are dull.
Are not deep rivers, as they flow
Along the pleasant meadow, slow?
While shallow streamlets frisk and stray
Among the pebbles, cold as they.
Come, sit upon my knee, and then
I shall be quite alive again,
Altho' my too imperfect speech
Say nothing more than what you teach.
