Living
The Sorrowing Heart Will Seek No Pleasant Place
From Works and Life, ed. Forster, vol. VIII (1876)
Living
The sorrowing heart will seek no pleasant place
To rest in, but drops down on each sharp thorn.
Poor self -tormentor! were not pangs enow
Thine heretofore? must wrongs afflict thee still?
Must Pleasure bring thee fresh, with Memory
Recalling them, then leaving her behind?
So 'tis decreed: drop on thy thorn, and die.
