Nature

This night the cheerless autumn moon

by Ōe no Chisato lived c. end of 9th century

Translated by William N. Porter (1909) · From A Hundred Verses from Old Japan (Hyakunin Isshu), poem 23

Nature

This night the cheerless autumn moon
Doth all my mind enthrall;
But others also have their griefs,
For autumn on us all
Hath cast her gloomy pall.
