Fortuna maior

by Henry Peacham 1576?–1643?

From Minerva Britanna (1612)

Living

HEERE Povertie, doth conquered Fortune bind,
And vnder keepes, like HERCVLES in aw,
The meaning is, the wise and valiant mind,
In Povertie esteemes not Fate a straw:
And though a while this angry Goddesse frowne,
She vtterlie shall never cast him downe.

If Wisdome haue but what the corpes doth craue,
Convenient foode and raiment for the back:
And libertie to liue, not like a slaue
Here in this world, she little else doth lack:
But can contented in her cottage sing,
In greater safetie, then the greatest King.
