Death & Dying
Book VII, 304
Translated by W. R. Paton (1916–18) · From The Greek Anthology (Loeb, vol. II, 1917)
The man’s name was Hippaemon, the horse’s Podargos, the dog’s Lethargos, and the serving-man’s Babes, a Thessalian, from Crete, of Magnesian race, the son of Haemon. He perished fighting in the front ranks. Much fun was made of it in Antiquity, as the complicated description of the ‘état civil” of Hippaemon was maliciously interpreted as comprising the “état civil” of the animals.
This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
