The Big Rug

by Po Chü-i 772–846

Translated by Arthur Waley (1918) · From A Hundred and Seventy Chinese Poems (1918)

Living

That so many of the poor should suffer from cold what can we do to
prevent?
To bring warmth to a single body is not much use.
I wish I had a big rug ten thousand feet long,
Which at one time could cover up every inch of the City.
