Book III, 30: On Idolatry

by Francis Quarles 1592–1644

From Divine Fancies (1633), Book III

Religion

Can common madnes find a thing, that's more
Repugnant to the very Lawes of Nature;
That the Creators Image should adore
The senslesse Image of a sensuall creature!
If such be Gods; if such our helpers be,
O, what are Men! How more then Beasts are we!
