Book III, 55: On Carnall Mirth
From Divine Fancies (1633), Book III
Religion
Who seeks to quench by help of Carnal frends
Those fiery Errants that the consciēce sends,
Redeemes his Peace, but with a further spoyle;
Drinks in a Fever: quenches Fyre with Oyle.
Lord, if thou strike my Conscience; and that, Me:
I will expect, and trust no Friend, but Thee.
