Book III, 88: On formall Devotion
From Divine Fancies (1633), Book III
Religion
Men doe God Service with the same devotion,
As the soule Body takes his loathed Potion:
They stay and stay, then gulp it downe in hast,
Not for the pleasure, but to have it past:
Whose druggy Tast goes so against their minde;
That, oft, the better part is left behind,
And what is taken,'s taken but in vaine,
It either works not, or comes up againe.
