Book I, 70: On Mans goodnesse

by Francis Quarles 1592–1644

From Divine Fancies (1633), Book I

Religion

Thy hand, great God, created all things good;
But Man rebell'd, and in defiance stood
Against his owne Creation, and did staine,
Nay lost that goodnesse which the Beasts retaine
What ap ha's Man, poore Man, above the rest,
That hath lesse goodnesse left him, then a Beast!
