Nature

Too long to-night you’ve lingered here

by Sei Shōnagon retired 1000

Translated by William N. Porter (1909) · From A Hundred Verses from Old Japan (Hyakunin Isshu), poem 62

Nature

Too long to-night you’ve lingered here,
And, though you imitate
The crowing of a cock, ’twill not
Unlock the tollbar gate;
Till daylight must you wait.
