Nature

How difficult it is for men

by Takashina no Takako lived c. 1004

Translated by William N. Porter (1909) · From A Hundred Verses from Old Japan (Hyakunin Isshu), poem 54

Nature

How difficult it is for men
Not to forget the past!
I fear my husband’s love for me
Is disappearing fast;
This day must be my last.
