Epigram 19: May it be calld intollerable pride

by John Taylor 1580–1653

From The Sculler (1612)

Religion

May it be calld intollerable pride,
For man to sit in the Almighties seate?
Or on mens shoulders pompously to ride,
To terrifie the World with thundring threate?
To weare a three-pilde Crowne vpon his head?
To haue both Kings and Princes at his becke?
Whose Horse by mighty Potentates is ,
Who proudly footes vpon the Emperors necke?
If trickes like these for pride may be alloud,
Then I conclude the Pope must needs be proud.
