Goddess of Youth

by László Ungvárnémeti Tóth 1788–1820

Translated by John Bowring (1830) · From Poetry of the Magyars (1830)

Living

Goddess benignant—Hera's lovely daughter
Hebe! rewarder thou of deeds heroic—
Bride of Heracles—He who in Olympus
Gloriously won thee.

Praise waits on thee—who on the Gods outpourest
Blessings—thy nectar gives renewing beauty;
Kindling fresh life for him to whom thy goblet,
Smiling, thou givest.

Jove is immortal; but as years roll onwards,
Joyous he drinks of the perfumed ambrosia;
Nectar of heaven—though by thy fair hand proffered,
Zeus despiseth.

Pour it for me, for me, beloved Goddess!
Give me some drops of thy delicious nectar;
Joyful I'll wing me, for departure ready,
E'en in youth's spring-time.
