Genesis: Eager alas, for sensual good

by Charles Wesley 1707–1788

From Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures (1762) · Osborn ed., vol. 9 (1870)

Religion

Eager alas, for sensual good,
Indulging thy ambition vain,
What find'st thou in that pleasant food,
But bitterness of shame and pain?
The punishment for the offence
How just! how suitably applied,
Anguish to mortify thy sense,
Subjection to chastise thy pride!
