Warm'd by fond nature's wild desire,
I brought strange uncommanded fire:
Inflamed with persecuting zeal,
I served Thee — with the fire of hell:
Yet undevour'd, O God, I sing
Thy grace; and now my offering bring,
Pure incense, kindled from above
By the true fire of Jesu's love.
