May I not (?/ my comfort fled,
When lovely Jonathan is dead?
God unprovoked my sorrow sees,
Jesus allows the soft distress:
Hence o'er the pleasing past I rove.
Recall the wonders of his love,
And till my life of mourning end.
Lament for a departed friend!
