Jeremiah 31:18: I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning, &c

Hast Thou not heard my sad complaint?
Do I not still myself bemoan?
With all Thy chastisements I want
Thy grace, to break my heart of stone:
Till Thou my stony heart hast broke.
Rebellious in distress and pain,
I struggle to throw off Thy yoke,
I kick against the pricks in vain.

If Thou my stubbornness convert,
Converted I shall truly be,
For Thou the great Jehovah art.
My Lord, my God, who died for me:
Rent by that final groan Divine,
The rocky mountains must remove,
And hearts inflexible as mine
Bow down to Thy expiring love.
