Matthew 5: Whate'er to magistrates belong

by Charles Wesley 1707–1788

From Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures (1762) · Osborn ed., vol. 10 (1871)

Religion

Whate'er to magistrates belong.
Who bear the sword and not in vain,
I dare not render wrong for wrong,
Or grief for grief, or pain for pain:
The spirit of fierce vindictive yi wj
I hate, when Jesus' mind I know.
And goods, and life itself would lose
Rather than hurt my deadliest foe.
