Matthew 6:2: They have their reward

by Charles Wesley 1707–1788

From Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures (1762) · Osborn ed., vol. 10 (1871)

Religion

Through false pretence of honouring Thee
Whoe'er themselves proclaim
Indulge their secret vanity,
And cloak it with Thy name;
For all their works and righteousness,
The hypocrites abhorr'd
In human, momentary praise
Receive their whole reward.
