Matthew 16:24: To suffer, and abstain
From Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures (1762) · Osborn ed., vol. 10 (1871)
To suffer, and abstain
My calling here I see,
Renounce myself, my Lord to gain,
And die, to live with Thee:
With Thee I daily die,
Thy welcome burden bear,
And follow after to the sky.
And claim a kingdom there.
The law which Jesus gives,
Who will not yet obey,
A burden to himself he lives,
Nor finds the narrow way:
But who himself denies.
And keeps the patient word,
Charged with the cross he runs, he flies.
To meet his heavenly Lord.
