He offer'd them sufficient light
Which when they could but would not see,
He left them in their nature's night.
Their unbelief's obscurity:
He ofter'd them His softening grace,
And when its power they scorn'd to feel,
Forsook the sick self-harden'd race
Who would not suffer Him to heal.
