The Approach to the Choir: Invitation

by Isaac Williams 1802–1865

From The Cathedral (1838; ed. W. Benham, 1889)

Religion

O drooping Sadness, whose rapt gaze
Hath been on face of slow-pac'd night
Watching the beam of dawning light,
Come here, and learn thy song of praise.

O Singleness of eye and heart,
Which fleetest over earthly things,
Nor fold'st below thy weary wings,
Here find thy rest, and take thy part.

O sacred Awe, whose downcast look
Is on the pavement of the shrine,
Which all unearthly seems to shine,
Look up, a healing Presence brook !
