Love

Memory

by W. B. Yeats 1865–1939

From The Wild Swans at Coole (1919)

LoveNature

One had a lovely face,
And two or three had charm,
But charm and face were in vain
Because the mountain grass
Cannot but keep the form
Where the mountain hare has lain.

✦ ✦ ✦

Of the women he has known, 'one had a lovely face, / And two or three had charm', but both were in vain, because the mountain grass keeps the form where the hare has lain.
