Shah Mubarak Abru

c. 1683–1733

The introduction to Hindustani Lyrics says that Abru was born at Lucknow, lived at Delhi, was a darwesh of the Order of Kalenders, and wrote an Urdu diwan much appreciated for the ingenious allegories in which it abounds. Abru is his takhallus, or pen-name.

The one piece given here is drawn from Hindustani Lyrics (London: The Sufi Publishing Society, 1919), in the English verse of Inayat Khan and Jessie Duncan Westbrook. It is a free rendering, not a literal translation, and the original Urdu poem is untitled; it is named here by its first line.
