Sarah Flower Adams

1805–1848

Sarah Flower Adams (1805–1848) was an English poet and hymn-writer, the author of “Nearer, My God, to Thee”.

The poems here are taken from Alfred H. Miles (ed.), The Poets and the Poetry of the Century (London: Hutchinson, 1891–1897), vol. 10, from the Internet Archive scans of that edition. Spelling is that of the anthology; Miles's biographical essay and extracts from longer poems are omitted, and only poems that could be read cleanly from the scan are included.

  1. O! I Would Sing a Song of Praise
  2. Hallowed memories of the past
  3. He Sendeth Sun, He Sendeth Shower
  4. Part in Peace! is Day Before Us?
  5. Love
  6. Nearer, My God, to Thee
  7. The Mourners Came at Break of Day
