al-Marrar ibn Munqidh

7th century

Al-Marrar ibn Munqidh was a contemporary of Jarir and lived during the first century of Islam, as the Qur'anic quotation in Ode XIV shows. His tribe, the Bal-'Adawiyah, was a branch of Tamim.

Ode XIV is addressed to a woman who reproaches him for not being rich in camels; Lyall observes that Ode XVI is really two separate pieces.

  1. Ode XIV: How many a man of evil
  2. Ode XVI: Strange, that Khaulah knows me not
