Alpheus of Mytilene

date uncertain (probably 1st century BC / 1st century AD)

Alpheus of Mytilene is an epigrammatist represented in the Greek Anthology, where his poems are generally thought to come from the Garland of Philip of Thessalonica. His date is uncertain, but he probably belongs to the early imperial period.

His epigrams include prayers to Poseidon and reflections on the ruined cities of the heroic age, such as Troy and Mycenae. Mackail's Select Epigrams (1890) prints several of them.

  1. To Poseidon of Aegae (Mackail)
  2. The Tale of Troy (Mackail)
  3. Mycenae (1) (Mackail)
  4. Mycenae
