Aneirin

fl. late 6th century

Aneirin is the poet to whom the Gododdin is ascribed, an elegy for the warriors of the Votadini who rode from Din Eidyn (Edinburgh) to fall at Catraeth, perhaps about the end of the sixth century. It survives in the Book of Aneirin, a Welsh manuscript of the late thirteenth century, in a text of mixed age and layered authorship.

The poems are given in the Rev. D. Silvan Evans's translation, printed with the Welsh in William F. Skene's The Four Ancient Books of Wales (1868). The ascription to Aneirin is traditional.
