Anton Ulrich, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel
Anton Ulrich was born at Hitzacker in 1633 and died at Salzdahlum in 1714. He ruled the duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, from 1685 jointly with his brother and from 1704 alone, and in 1710 he converted to the Roman Catholic Church. Besides his hymns he wrote long courtly prose romances, notably Die durchlauchtige Syrerin Aramena.
The English versions here are Catherine Winkworth's in Lyra Germanica (1855).
