Arethas the Deacon

c. 860 – after 932

Arethas, deacon and later archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, was a Byzantine scholar and book-collector. The Anthology preserves under his name three epitaphs, two for his sister Anna and one for the nun Febronia.

This archive carries the 3 epigrams ascribed to the poet in the fifth volume of W. R. Paton's prose translation (Loeb, 1918): Book XV: 32, 33, 34.

  1. Book XV, 32: On his own Sister
  2. Book XV, 33: On the Same
  3. Book XV, 34: On the Nun Febronia
