Ernst Moritz Arndt

1769–1860

Ernst Moritz Arndt was born on the island of Rügen. A historian and patriotic poet of the wars against Napoleon, he wrote the song Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland? and later taught at Bonn.

James Clarence Mangan (1803–1849) translated this poet in his German Anthology (1845); the poems here are his English versions, as reprinted in Poems, ed. John Mitchel (New York, 1859).
