Barnabe Barnes (c. 1571–1609) was the son of Richard Barnes, Bishop of Durham, and studied at Brasenose College, Oxford. In 1591 he served with the Earl of Essex's expedition to Normandy.

His sonnet sequence Parthenophil and Parthenophe (1593) was dedicated to William Percy, and A Divine Centurie of Spirituall Sonnets followed in 1595. His tragedy The Devil's Charter was acted before King James in 1607. The poems here are taken from the original editions, in their old spelling.
