Richard Barnfield

1574–1620

Richard Barnfield was an English poet whose pastoral and erotic verse, including ‘The Affectionate Shepherd,’ was controversial in its own time for its open homoeroticism.

Some of his lyrics, including ‘As it fell upon a day,’ were long misattributed to his contemporary William Shakespeare.
