Thomas Haynes Bayly

1797–1839

Thomas Haynes Bayly (1797–1839) was an English songwriter and dramatist, born at Bath. His sentimental ballads, among them "I'd be a butterfly" and "Oh! no, we never mention her", were widely sung in the 1820s and 1830s.

The 2 poems here are the pieces printed under his name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.

  1. I'd be a Butterfly born in a bower
  2. A Fashionable Novel
  3. She Wore a Wreath of Roses
  4. Oh! Where Do Fairies Hide Their Heads?
  5. Do You Remember
