Bernard of Cluny

fl. c. 1140

Bernard was a Benedictine monk of the abbey of Cluny who flourished about 1140. He is the author of the long Latin satirical and devotional poem De contemptu mundi, whose opening words are 'Hora novissima'.

The most famous part of the poem, on the glories of heaven, is given here as The Celestial Country in the English verse of John Mason Neale, as printed in C. C. Nott's The Seven Great Hymns of the Mediaeval Church (1902).
