Edmund Bolton

d. c. 1633

Edmund Bolton was the author of The Elements of Armories (1610) and of the treatise Hypercritica (c. 1618). A. H. Bullen, who calls him one of the most learned men of his time, adds that he was a retainer of George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, whom he accompanied to Spain in 1623, and that he died about 1633.

England's Helicon (1600) prints one poem over his full name, "A Canzon Pastoral in honour of her Majesty", and four more signed only "E. B."; Bullen's notes take the initials to be Bolton's. All five poems here are from that anthology, as printed in Bullen's 1887 edition.

  1. A Shepherd's Idyllion
  2. A Palinode
  3. A Canzon Pastoral in honour of her Majesty
  4. A Pastoral Ode to an Honourable Friend
  5. The Shepherd's Song: a Carol or Hymn for Christmas
