Gordon Bottomley

1874–1948

Gordon Bottomley (1874–1948) was an English poet and verse dramatist, born in Keighley, Yorkshire. Ill health kept him from regular work, and he spent most of his life at Silverdale on the Lancashire coast, near the Cartmel peninsula of his poem 'New Year's Eve, 1913'. His early volumes included The Gate of Smaragdus (1904) and Chambers of Imagery (1907 and 1912).

He was among the poets Edward Marsh gathered in the Georgian Poetry anthologies, appearing in the volumes of 1911-1912, 1916-1917 and 1918-1919. He is remembered chiefly for his poetic plays, which are not included here; the pieces in this archive are the shorter poems he contributed to those anthologies.
