Charlotte Brontë

1816–1855

Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) was an English novelist and poet, born at Thornton in Yorkshire and raised at Haworth parsonage, where her father was perpetual curate. With her sisters Emily and Anne she wrote from childhood, and in 1846 the three published a joint volume of verse under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. The 1846 Poems sold only a handful of copies, but it led all three sisters to prose fiction. Charlotte's Jane Eyre (1847) made her famous, followed by Shirley (1849) and Villette (1853). She died in 1855. Her nineteen poems in the 1846 volume are given here in the order printed.
