Thomas Edward Brown
Thomas Edward Brown (1830–1897) was a Manx poet, scholar and schoolmaster. Born in Douglas, Isle of Man, the son of the vicar of Braddan, he was educated at King William’s College and at Christ Church, Oxford, and spent most of his working life teaching at Clifton College near Bristol.
His Fo’c’s’le Yarns (1881) and later volumes tell the stories of Manx fishermen, farmers and parsons in rhymed Anglo-Manx dialect, alongside English lyrics of nature, faith and memory. The Collected Poems (1900), prepared by his friends H. F. Brown, H. G. Dakyns and W. E. Henley, with an introduction by Henley, brought them together with some verse that had not been published in his lifetime.
