Thomas Browne
Thomas Browne (1771–1798) was born at Lastingham, the son of the vicar, and began as a schoolmaster at Yeddingham and then Bridlington. In 1797 he moved to Hull to edit the newly founded Hull Advertiser; he took orders and married, and died the following year.
His friends published Poems on Several Occasions in 1800. Most of it is in standard English, but the few dialect pieces, in which F. W. Moorman saw the influence of Burns, circulated widely in Yorkshire. The three poems here come from Moorman's Yorkshire Dialect Poems (1916).
