Sir Richard Francis Burton
Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821–1890) was an English explorer, soldier, diplomat and Arabist. He travelled to Mecca in disguise, sought the source of the Nile, and is best remembered as the translator of The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night (the Arabian Nights) and of other Eastern texts.
His verse includes The Kasidah (1880), his own English poem published as a translation from a fictitious Persian poet, Haji Abdu, and his rendering of Camões's The Lusiads (1880), which is already in this archive under Camões.
