Jeremiah Joseph Callanan

Jeremiah Joseph Callanan was born in Cork and studied at Maynooth and Trinity College Dublin. He worked as a tutor, made English versions of Irish songs, and died in Lisbon in 1829.

Yeats credited his translations from the Irish with first giving English-speaking Ireland an honest style. Yeats's anthology misprints his death year as 1839.
