George Canning

1770–1827

George Canning (1770–1827) was a British statesman, Foreign Secretary and, briefly, Prime Minister in 1827. In 1797–98 he was one of the writers of The Anti-Jacobin, a weekly paper that ridiculed radical politics and fashionable verse by parody.

The poem here is the song James Parton ascribed to him in his anthology of English humorous poetry. Pieces that Parton credits only to the Anti-Jacobin, or to several hands, are not included.

  1. Song (from The Anti-Jacobin, 1798)
  2. A Political Despatch
  3. Fragment of an Oration
  4. The Pilot That Weathered the Storm
  5. The Friend of Humanity and the Knife-Grinder
  6. The Soldier's Friend
