William Carleton (1794–1869) was an Irish novelist and short-story writer, born into a Catholic farming family in County Tyrone. He became famous for Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry (1830–33), which drew on his own rural upbringing, and for later novels such as Fardorougha the Miser (1839).
