Jane Welsh Carlyle

1801–1866

Jane Baillie Welsh Carlyle (1801–1866) was born at Haddington in Scotland and in 1826 married the historian Thomas Carlyle. She is remembered above all for her letters, which are among the most admired of the century.

She wrote little verse and published almost none in her lifetime; the poem “To a Swallow Building under our Eaves” is the piece by which she is usually represented in anthologies.
