John Chalkhill

fl. c. 1600

John Chalkhill (fl. c. 1600) is known chiefly through Izaak Walton, who described him as a friend of Edmund Spenser, printed songs signed with his name in The Compleat Angler, and in 1683 published his pastoral romance Thealma and Clearchus. Little else is recorded of his life.

Both pieces given here come from Walton's Compleat Angler: Coridon's country song and Piscator's song in praise of the angler's life.

  1. Coridon's Song: Oh the sweet contentment
  2. Piscator's Song: O the gallant Fisher's life
