Charles d’Orléans
Charles d’Orléans (1394–1465) was a French prince and poet, Duke of Orléans, who was taken prisoner at Agincourt in 1415 and held in England for twenty-five years. During his captivity he wrote many ballades, rondeaux and songs.
The poem here is Henry Francis Cary’s English version of one of his lyrics, as printed in the Library of Poetry and Song edited by William Cullen Bryant (1871).
