Alison Cockburn

1712–1794

Alison Cockburn (née Rutherford) was a Scottish society hostess in Edinburgh, a friend of Hume, Scott and Burns, and the author of one of the best-known versions of The Flowers of the Forest.

Gilfillan prints her version, which opens 'I've seen the smiling', beside the older version by Jean Elliot.
