Susan Coolidge

1835–1905

Susan Coolidge was the pen name of Sarah Chauncey Woolsey (1835–1905), born in Cleveland, Ohio, the eldest of a family of five children. She is remembered chiefly as the author of the Katy Did books for children, beginning with What Katy Did (1872), but she also wrote verse throughout her life, mostly short religious and domestic lyrics, elegies and occasional pieces.

This selection gathers the three volumes of her verse: Verses (1880), A Few More Verses (copyright 1889) and Last Verses, published posthumously in 1906 with a memoir by her sister. Poems are given in that order, and each poem records the book it came from.
